Have you ever seen two drastically different friends become close? In the book, “Freak the Mighty”, Kevin (Freak) and Maxwell (mighty) are completely different from each other both mentally and physically, yet they become great friends throughout the story. In the novel “Freak the Mighty” by Rodman Philbrick, the theme is that people can become friends regardless of differences and societal expectations. The author communicates this theme by using hyperbole. Freak and Mighty are as different as two people can be. They have different interests, and according to the author, different levels of intelligence. For example, on page 4, Maxwell says, “... I never had a brain..” and to contrast that, when he was talking about Freak, on page 13, he

Or Abner Packer, the driver of the six o'clock bus from Mobile, who exchanges waves with us every day as he passes in a dust-cloud whoosh. Or the young Wistons, a California couple whose car one afternoon broke down outside the house and who spent a pleasant hour chatting with us on the porch (young Mr. Wiston snapped our picture, the only one we've ever had taken). Is it because my friend is shy with everyone except strangers that these strangers, and merest acquaintances, seem to us our truest friends?” (Capote 3) This quote is very inspirational because it gives us the sense of longing that Buddy feels toward his friend and role…

The underlying premise that “Friendship is a single soul living in two bodies” (by Aristotle) was not evidenced by Knowles’s novel A Separate Peace. My interpretation of Aristotle’s quote is that true friendship is a very deep bond that resides at a spiritual level between two friends. In other words, the bond of true friendship is so strong that the two friends are connected in a manner that defies physical boundaries and earthly limitations like the human body – even a broken one. True friends have a shared stream of conscientiousness that both can tap into. In A Separate Peace, Aristotle’s quote is not reflected as Gene was initially manipulated through peer pressure and then by his own guilt.…

The short story “Cathedral” written by Raymond Carver in 1989 is a great example on how differences can come together and start a platonic relationship. Often at times, there can be confusing items you see that shows on how no to minds are alike to each other in ways. As in the short story, SkyDiving With Friends, written by Mitzi Pulido, is about the author with their group of friends going on an adventure in the sky. I personally feel, that Pulido wrote this story to show that friendship a powerful bond can be even making a person dream of them, because of the fondness in the relationship. Personally, I do not dream of friends, which I can’t really connect to the author, yet I interpret it in a different way than Pulido did. In the story there are three main points, that are shown which are, on how that friends can be more close than family, followed by having adventures with friends can turn out to be good…

Montaigne argues that “Since brothers have to guide their careers along the same path and at the same rate, it is inevitable that they often jostle and clash with each other” preventing a true friendship from forming (Montaigne 166). Once again a friendship cannot occur, as the competition and similarities between brothers is too overpowering. Along with familial relationships, there are romantic relationships that also fall into the same category. Friendships between men and women who are romantically involved are doomed to fail as “Enjoyment destroys it [the friendship], as having a fleshy end” (Montaigne 167).…
