The book a Separate Peace by John Knowles is a historical fiction book. In this book it shows how the relationship between two characters Gene and Finny. How one another impacted their friendship through broken bones, to having to change your dreams to carry on one another, to being the Valedictorian. In the book it shows the relationship between these two absolute best friends. Finny believes, after not jumping out of the tree when they had earlier in the book, Leper will finally jump out of this tree. Finny approached the room where Gene was, when he rounded the corner he asked Gene if he would like to go watch. Gene then went on to tell him that he was studying. He then goes on to say “ If I need to study, then so do you.”. Finny then replied “I didn't know you need to study, I didn't think you ever did. I thought it just came to you.”. Finny wants Gene to prepare for the Olympics because that's what Finny was preparing for as a young athlete. However, since Finny can no longer participate in sports events, he would like Gene to participate in the Olympics as a part of Finny. “ Leave your fantasy life out of this. We’re grooming you for the Olympics,pal, in 1944.”. Finny wants Gene to understand that he is just as deep of a friend as Gene, and wants him to know that he is not the reason for his fall. Although, if he feels that way this is how he can make it up to him. Finny and Gene both have the utmost respect for each other. They are the best of friends and don't want that to be tarnished, they have a bond they don't ever want to be broken.
