The purpose of this essay is to show what we have learned in class. This includes describing the relationship wheel and intimacy ladder and applying it to the real-life situations in the movie, The Sandlot. There are more concepts that we have to include in this paper such as theory application, we will have to prove if the main characters have a healthy relationship, discus why we need relationships, and finally apply a theory that we have learned to the movie. They don’t have exploitation because they simply do not hate each other. In the movie they don’t show anything or provide any good examples of this so I decided they don’t have self-concept. By not having these two they only have 4/6 characteristics of a healthy relationship. They reach trust when Benny trusts Scotty when he holds up his glove to catch the ball, and Scotty Trusts Benny to hit the ball close to his glove so he can catch it. Next, they show affection by continuing to be long term friends when they are all grown up showing that they like each other. Scotty in a way punishes Benny when Benny lets Scotty practice with them a second time. When Benny lets him practice with them he is punished by his other friends when they whine and cry to him. In the end it turns into a reward of friendship and when he meets Babe Ruth in his dream because without Scotty hitting the ball over the fence he would never have been known as the town legend. Finally, they share the same amount of power when they respect and try each other’s ideas to get the ball back from the Beast. The Applicable theory I have chosen is Halls Proxemics theory. After looking at Halls theory I would say they are described as friends because they are in usually in the social and personal zone according to Halls theory. They used the social zone more often and by this Scotty started to look up to Benny as a role model. Since he looked up to Benny this way I think he felt wanted or important when Benny talked to him on a personal
