Okay kids, gather round. Today, we are going to learn about the Delano Strike.
It has been many years now, since the strike took place. It started on October 8th, 1965. That was fifty years ago. Really long ago, right?
I bet you know what a strike is? If you don't, I'll tell you.
A strike is when people choose to stay at home because they are not happy with a situation at work. Sometimes, during a strike, these people might go outside with placards (that is notes written on things like cardboard paper) and speak out about the reasons why they have refused to continue working.
People usually go on strikes when they feel they are being treated badly. When they do this, they hope the authorities will do something to make the situation better.
Think of it like when you want that really beautiful dress or a pair of trousers but mommy doesn't want to get it for you. You could cry or stomp your feet to get her attention. Once she knows you are not happy, she might change her mind and get you the dress or pair of trousers or at least buy you something else that makes you happy.
