History of Mental Health Mental illness is a serious condition that affects a person behavior, mood, physical health and employment. Negative stigma towards people with mental illness were believed to be cursed or possessed cause difficulty finding mental health professional to treat mental disorders. In the past treatment for mental ill patients were institutional psychiatric hospital. This environment was poor living condition and understaff which violated human rights. Poor health behavior for example smoking, obesity, and poor diet increase the risk of depression. In the journal reconsidering the role of social disadvantages in physical and mental health conduct a study and found black live in more poverty crime neighborhood, face more disturbing events and stress triggers than whites. As a results black have lower rate of mental disorders despite the social disadvantages psychiatric illness with a particular race. Mental disorders is a mental condition that affects everyone regardless of socioeconomic status or race. (Briana Mezuk, Cleopatra M. Abdou, Darrell Hudson, Hedwig Lee, James S. Jackson, Jane A. Rafferty, Kiarri N. Kershaw,2010) This affects people mental health because stereotypes and negative stigma perception are created and it affect how people are being treated and hinder quality treatment. Promotion of mental health issues can assistance in the initiative for change in mental health population. More awareness to public, policy makers, and healthcare to address psychiatric illness and treatment is important to have resources in communities and online to promote awareness. Increase collaborative efforts between patient and psychiatrist to develop a professional partnership. The Affordable Care Act aid many people to get access to health insurance and mental health ill patients. Lack of transportation to mental health services causes discouragement to seek help. Negative public stigma regarding health care is still present despite efforts to educate people about mental health. The need for more public awareness, education, medical accessibility and treatment is limitation that can be change with collaboration of health care professional, psychiatrics, educators, legislative etc. Once this barrier is overcome mental health implementation of adequate care, services, and mental coverage will be achieve for more
