There is much help today, and there are many resources and places for help. There are also many people suffering from a mental illness that do not ask for help and their condition becomes worse. According to the National Alliance Mental Illness website “Individuals living with serious mental illness face an increased risk of having chronic medical conditions. Adults in the U.S. living with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than others, largely due to treatable medical conditions.” (NAMI.com) This statistic is a very impacting and helps people realize just the effect that mental illness has on people. Not only does the mental illness affect the person, but it also increases their risk of other diseases. And they may not even notice the other disease before it’s too late. With help they can overcome these problems and prevent others from occurring. Many students on campuses suffer from mental illnesses. But, these are more likely to go unknown because there are laws protecting their privacy and keep them from being tested for illnesses. A student at a university wrote in her essay “Students suffering from mental illness are reluctant to ask for help, yet the very burden of treatment rests squarely on those who are suffering.” (Anaya 84) Many become too scared or ashamed so, they do not tell anybody about it their concerns. But, when they do not tell anyone about their problem they do not get a solution. The effects of no one knowing about the problem of mental illness leads can lead to them not being educated about the problem. But, if more people knew about the growing problem there could be more solutions along with more awareness. But another problem affects the awareness
