There are so many absurd beauty norms that girls of all ages see in advertisements wherever they go. Advertisements with very slim, large breasted women modeling for a perfume or makeup item, are subliminally telling women that in order to be heard or seen as important, they need to buy this product. With that being said, the average person does not know that one photo has been edited over and over again to make that model look perfect according to society’s standards. In the video “Killing Us Softly 4”, they showed one model taking many pictures to find the best one, after which, they immediately started editing the photo. They made her eyes bigger, enlarged her breasts, cheek bones more prominent, erased all fly away strands from her hair, and changed her complexion to be crystal clear. They had retouched so many things in the picture that the model in the original looked nothing like herself in the finished advertisement. When this advertisement is displayed with all these perfect features that are not realistic, men see it and think this is the way women look naturally. Real women and girls are constantly comparing themselves to these advertisements on a daily basis. Therefore, women are daily setting themselves up for failure to be able to love themselves, but cannot because of their expectations of how they think they need to look. The obsession with thinness has gotten so far out of hand, models are size double zero and clothes designers are still saying that they are overweight. Women’s bodies are objectified by advertisers because they turn their bodies into objects, not seeing them as living people. They are just another prop in the background to help sell that expensive sports car or over sexualize a product which would otherwise be mundane. This dehumanizes the female body by focusing on one part of them and hacking it apart, taking only what they find attractive. These dehumanizing ads lead to an increased profit in plastic surgery, fad diets, and expensive weight loss tactics, which is ultimately what companies want; to make money off of women’s low self
