Mercerism is the form of religion that is left on Earth; it focuses on empathy, which is supposed to be a feeling unique to humans. Characters “fuse” with Mercer and walk up an eternal hill while being hit with the occasional rock. The purpose of this is to promote the sharing of feelings, whether they are happy or sad, grateful or annoyed, with the intent to magnify the ability to feel empathy. Buster Friendly is an entertainment personality that is on most of the day and night. It is the only form of entertainment that is available on earth, and therefore is listened to and watched by everyone who has a radio or television.
