Rhetorical Situation

Along with the chronological organization of the book, Thomas separated the book into 5 sections: “The Midwest Years,” “The Cartoon Maker,” “Toward a New Art,” “Stretching the Horizon,” and “The Distant Reach.” Each section has its own main idea, but Thomas organizes each similarly. This is a form of classification, as the different parts of Disney's life, which had different focuses, are classified based on the title of the sections. “The Midwest Years” follows Disney's early life and family, and features narration and description as its primary rhetorical forms. “Not as much as a quarter-mile north on that street, a mile from the Marceline terminal and just outside the town limits, lied a two-story frame house on the south-eastern corner of a large farm. Some inventions pioneered by The Walt Disney Company are described, such as a type of multiplane camera. “This allowed for drawings on pieces of glass to be placed at different distances from the camera to create the illusion of depth” (Thomas 176). The sections flow into each other smoothly, as the next section, “Stretching the Horizon,” goes into Disney’s major successes and outlook for the future. Finally, “The Distance Reach” pays respect to Walt Disney’s life, as the book was finished after he passed away. “‘He was a really kind fellow, always warm and optimistic’” (Thomas 337).
