Although the aging process is not fully understood by society, scientists like Dan Buettner revealing that a complex interplay of genetics and the environment are factors that contribute to health and longevity. Aging is a constant development and change, and is the product of the balance between individuals and environment. Buettner was able to identify the difference and similar patterns among individuals who live in the Blue Zones. In his article: The Secrets of Long Life, he shows that the people in the Blue Zones incorporate physical activity naturally into their daily lives giving them a sense of purpose, low stress levels and strong families. Their environment contributes to nutritional and healthy choices too. Buettner discovered that the Italian island of Sardinia has the highest number of male centenarians in the world. In Japan, there is the longest disability-free life expectancy and in Loma Linda, California, a community of …show more content…
Buettner shows these people follows traditional values that soon became their everyday lifestyle. According to Buettner, the secret to longevity does not have to do anything with diet and exercise but more to do with the environment a person lives in, having strong families to keep the person motivated, growing your own garden, doing daily prayer, meditation, ancestor traditional values and living for a purpose. In New York City we could have longer longevity if we had a purpose, spending time with your family and friends, and having the spirituality. In the Blue Zones, many of the individuals are surrounded by other people who practice these behaviors or are born into communities of people who do so. For example, my grandfather (98 years old), eat a boiled egg everyday along with tofu chicken soup and variety of fruits and vegetables. He has also sense of purpose just like people in blue
