Throughout the process of aging, different cultures perceive aging in their own individual ways. Culture can play a huge role in which one ages and how society is to view those who age. However, each culture has its own beliefs about growing old and what specific roles older people play in the society they are a part of. With a rapid increase in the older population, society has changed to meet the needs of the elder population. The rapid increase in the older population is due to the fact that people are living longer. According to Gardiner and Kosmitzki (2011), “people are living longer than ever before, many over the age of one hundred” (p.79). The North American society focuses more on the younger generation than the older generation.

In reality, the families loved one is faced with lack of care and abuse in the care facility that has been trusted to provide quality care their loved one. According to the National Nursing Home Survey (2004), “in the United States, approximately 1.6 million elderly and disabled persons receive care in 1 of 17000 nursing homes” (Castle & Ferguson, 2010, p.426). With the number of individuals aging and supposed to double, questions of quality of care can arise in care facilities. With the rise of older individuals how does cultural responsibility reflect an elders care? Times are changing and so is society. Many people are working, both male and female household members. Whenever one’s parents is reaching an age in which care is needed, how is the care decided among the family members? Since people are a part of the working class, this means older family members that require care are put in care facilities or one quits their job to provide care for that family member. Most seniors are mentally and physically active regardless of age with great contributions to society. Societal norms marginalize seniors, treat them with disrespect, and make them feel unwelcome. With the onsets of ageism, seniors are robbed of choice, independence, and dignity. Being a part of the younger generation one must embrace our elders and show them the respect they deserve and welcome them as a part of society. We may be young, but our families are aging, and one day we will be put in a position of ageism. Growing up in the south, children were taught to respect their elders. Respecting an elder maybe in form such as letting them go ahead in line, assisting them with groceries, eating first, saying yes ma’am and no sir. I know I was taught to respect my elders and to this day I still do. I have noticed how the new generation does not care and thinks they are all that matters. This has shown a rise in ageism. I have noticed commercials on TV showing how old is old and younger is better. Why is the older population being discriminated against? Honestly, does anyone not care
