Cultural Competency Action Plan

Cultural Competency Action Plan There are ten standards of Cultural Competency that social workers must meet through their practice. Each standard tackles a different aspect in finally reaching cultural competency.
Standard 1: Ethics and Values In this standard, it is about “recognizing how personal and professional values may conflict” (Lum, 2011, p.28). I am not a religious person. However, I know when I need to put my beliefs aside in order to respect religions. When visiting a mosque, I was required to wear a headscarf. Personally, I do not think a headscarf will do anything for me but I was entering a space where this was expected. This experience shows appropriate behavior in a cultural setting.
Standard 2: Self- Awareness In this

As of now, I do not have much understanding of any popular cultural groups. Through the cultural immersion assignment, I have gained some insight on the cultures I chose. This assignment gave me confidence to attend events out of my comfort zone. With this new found confidence, I do plan on expanding my cultural knowledge.
Standard 4: Cross- Cultural Skills This standard puts your new cultural knowledge to use with future clients because you must be able to use their culture to better help them (Lum, 2011, p.29). I have already started doing this in a way. I am a Big Sister with Big Brother Big Sister of Atlanta. My little is a part of different cultures than I am. She is a believer of God while I do not believe in God. However, I use her religion to motivate her. She has a lot of problems at school that God gives her a sense of security. I am happy to include her religion into our conversations if she is benefiting from it.
Standard 5: Service Delivery To meet this standard, social workers must know about the resources around their community (Lum, 2011, p.29). I currently do not know about any necessary resources around my area. Without this knowledge, I will not be able to refer clients to different places. I do know the importance of knowing various resources, so I will fix

I have not promoted for this to be a rule but have translated at an elementary school. This experience showed me the need for more translators to be available. There were only 5 volunteer translators running from class to class. As a social worker, I will use this experience to push for more translators.
Standard 10: Cross- Cultural Leadership This standard focuses on teaching other professions about the “diverse client groups” we have (Lum, 2011, p.29). I have only done this on an individual level. I do not have clients yet but I am outspoken to my family on the clients I should be having in the future. I do plan on speaking to others about the diverse population because their needs are supposed to be met. Social Workers cannot do everything so if other workers need to expand their job requirements.

For this objective, the ACSW Standards of Practice that I chose are B4 (Consent for Services) and B8 (Termination of Services), as I have some experience with them at my current field placement. The B4 Consent for Services standard revolves around obtaining informed client consent before the providing of services is initiated. This essentially details that responsibility falls on the social worker to provide accurate and detailed information about what services they would/do offer, and what the implementation of those services would look like for the client (ASCW, 2013, p.10). As well, included in this is the duty to inform the client of any potential risks that said client may face, gaining informed consent from the client, and explaining to the client how informed consent for services may be removed or withdrawn (p. 10).…

Critical Analysis Paper #1 Question #1: Social Work and Systems Theory Social Work as a concept and a career is simple, yet difficult to define. Social work has grown and developed from the seed that is envelops social issues in our society. As Robbins, Chatterjee, and Canda state in Contemporary Human Behavior Theory (2012), defined situations within society have dictated the need for social work and advocates to speak on behalf of those who are unable to speak for themselves. From the inception of its career, social work has been associated with helping those in need, whether that be at a micro-level with individual therapy and case management, or a macro level with policy development and large scale advocacy efforts.…

Outline and Literature Review “Both prejudices and stereotypes are mental processes that we all experience but discrimination is different because it is a behavior or action that occurs when we treat people differently because of their membership in some group” (Harvey & Allard, 2015, p. 9). It is wrong to be singled out or retaliated on because of cultural bias. There is an increase in treating people unfairly because of their spiritual practices. It is unlawful to actively display bias because people vary in their beliefs (Ghumman, Ryan, Barclay, & Markel, 2013). “Employers are required to reasonably accommodate an employee’s sincerely held religious beliefs, observances, and practices when the provisions of such an accommodation would not…

Social workers aim to protect vulnerable people from abuse, neglect or self-harm and help to enhance their well-being and quality of life (University of York, 2014). It can be achieved via anti-oppressive practice (AOP) and anti-discriminatory practice (ADP). These two approaches are linked but differ in focus. Social Care Institute for Excellence defines ADP as an approach which seeks to reduce, undermine or eliminate discrimination, eradicate it from the social workers practice and challenge it in the practice of others (SCIE. 2014). Payne in 2005 defined discrimination as a means of identifying individuals and groups with certain characteristics and treating them less well than people or groups with conventionally valued characteristics…

CULTURE I grew up in eastern part of Nigeria, and my first knowledge of culture as a way of life was being passed to me through the oral tradition as I moved along with parents and relatives. I can remember my interpretation of culture had to do with language, food, dressing and mode of reference. In fact, people’s dress code or language mode easily exposed from which part of location they were from and this made me to associate culture with location and race. I remembered in an occasion my dad told me that people could change their mode of dressing in order to feel belonged to a particular group.…
