Haitian literature is posited around three codes of positive reference: indigenism, magical realism, and Marxism[3]. Essentially, these three references show how Haiti’s grim environment held a powerful presence in literature. The destructive nature of Haiti’s government towards its people can be seen in the titles of works of literature as well as the creativity of their respective authors. It can be noted that the titles of published works of literature held a double meaning for most. In French, it may be considered funny, but in Haiti, it was usually a local saying about the governments harsh reality towards its citizen.…
Island Possessed: Presentation Paper Island Possessed by Katherine Dunham is a beautiful introduction to Haiti. The book is comprised of stories, recollections and historical facts about the island that spare no details; good or bad. But the book causes the reader to reevaluate the definitions of good and bad while reading. Is good really good and is bad just different? Her articulation of emotions toward the historical Haitians, Haitian Vaudun culture and the people put into perspective how uniquely possessed this island really is.…
When in reality their racial identity was created based on a triangle of relationships shaped by Haiti, the US, and the Dominican Republic fusing together this unique identity the Dominican Republicans are bestowed with. Cubans by the same mixture were questioned if they too fell suit with being Black, Mexican, Spanish, Hispanic, or white. It is unfortunate but, these categories were automatically placed on individuals out of false ideals on what one should be, that penetrate into the ideals of today as…
Readers can notice this since trough the whole novel Adele is struggling while trying to pronounce the word parsley in Spanish ( perejil) and pass a Dominican in front of Trujillo 's forces". Also, this novel explains in details how many of Haitians are killed by the " parley forces trying to cross the Massacre River because they know that cannot pronounce the word parsley without a Haitian accent. I think that René Philoctète through this novel tries to convey the difficulties of " Haitian-creole roots as a central part to define Haitian culture. Since it is a hard realty to remember that the Haitian slaughter of 1937 occurred using Creole as a critical Element that condemned Haitian destiny. This happens because this novel satirizes Trujillo 's ridiculous and sarcastic myth of Dominican nationality.…
The Haitian American culture has been a long-surviving and well-adapting culture. Starting with the indigenous people that occupied the island, before Christopher Columbus’ arrival in 1492. Columbus, being a conqueror for Spain, claimed the island of Haiti for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella and named it Hispaniola meaning “little Spain”. From thenceforth the indigenous people of the island were killed off during gold conquests and the ruling of the Spanish by forced labor and diseases. With very little of the indigenous people surviving, Hispaniola became a part of the Spanish rule that was forgotten.…
Through this we learn that Haiti has been a nation that has been dominated and whose citizens have been dehumanized as slaves for centuries by the colonization of foreign countries. Haiti has been stripped of its resources for years and in present day, Farmer shows how the effects of centuries of abuse still manifest themselves in every day Haitian life through poverty and the general hopelessness of improvement; it is very important to understand the connection between the history of Haiti and how this served to mold the social responses of the arrival of HIV/AIDS in Haiti, both by Haitians themselves and by the United States. The trauma of poverty and discrimination implemented towards Haiti by richer developed nations is what constructed the internal and external cultural model of HIV/AIDS. The first accusation stems from this; within Haitian societies, sorcery was seen as the reason that HIV/AIDS was contracted. Farmer describes how the people of Haiti used sorcery to rationalize and cope with HIV/AIDS.…
Variant Identities of 20th Century Latinos Oxnard, about fifty miles north of Los Angeles, is one of many in California’s expansive agricultural regions. A small town, ideally situated on a coastal plane, providing the perfect balance of soil, and moisture from the Pacific Ocean. Great conditions for the strawberry. The desirable low growing fruit is not the easiest to harvest though, requiring arduous labor under the intense Southern California sun. On any given late-spring afternoon, you’ll will find a handful of hooded workers, stooped and picking basketfuls of the sweet berry.…
A lot of Haiti’s healthcare problems are related to the fact that there…
The religious framework of Vodou in Haiti can be traced back to traditions of slaves who were forcibly brought to Haiti from Kongo and Dahomey regions of West Africa (Desmangles, 1992). Haiti was previously called Saint-Domingue was colonized in 1492 and the colony was formed through the eighteenth century (Desmangles, 1992). As of 1797, around half a million inhabited the island people, ninety percent of which being of African origin (Desmangles, 1992). It is important to understand that Vodou has been a part of the Haitian way of life for as long as it’s been colonized, and the traditions associated with this worldview can’t and shouldn’t be wiped out by traveling…
Every country has its own genocide: Hitler has the Jews, Mussolini butchered his people; Russia has its soldiers; Japan slaughtered the Chinese; and the United States, murdered Native Americans. The U.S. government has tortured and brutally slaughtered millions of Native Americans throughout the centuries following the establishment of the United States Government. They have forced many Native Americans from their homelands and have relocated them to dry, desolate areas unwanted by the government, lands viewed as useless and unproductive. We, the Navajo have experienced this.…

The turbulent history of Hispaniola and the constant change of control on the island are two of the main reasons for this bad relationship between the countries. From 1822 to 1844 Haiti had complete control of the entire island. Trujillo used this twenty year period as a point of reference to blame Dominican problems on the Haitians. He often said that before the Haitian control of the Dominican Republic, the Dominicans were blond hair and blue eyed.…
“Cultural genocide”, that is exactly what happened when the white man colonized the Indian. To the outsider, Canada appears to be a ‘perfect’ country. From our free healthcare to our need to profusely apologize for bumping into inanimate objects, we are a nation envied by many. Our greatest strength lies in our diversity and multiculturalism. In our current Prime Minister’s words “diversity is at the very heart of Canada.…
The cultural genocide at the hands of the Indian residential school system along with historic and present day oppression and abuse is a blood stain on Canadian culture and government. The government has made steps to atone and reconcile for the destruction it brought upon the First Nations community, however, I do not think enough has been done or ever will be done as long as the oppressor’s government institution is in place. It will ultimately be left up to the First Nations people to come together as a unit to rebuild the structure of their community. Indian Residential School System The Indian residential schools (IRS) were domestic terrorism hubs and locations ordained by the Canadian government and churches which were operated and enforced…
