To Kill A Mockingbird: Courage Essay Racism is something that people face everyday, from not getting a certain job or being accused of a crime, purely from the color of their skin. This form of discrimination is said to have been over for about fifty years but there are still many cases when it seems as if it is still around. With racism comes another trait known as courage which means doing something that frightens you. Throughout the whole novel courage is shown in many cases for example when Tom Robinson went to trial for rapeing and beating a young white female. Although taking on this case will lead to more problems than one Finch does not seem to really care, he does not think twice before agreeing to be Tom’s lawyer. But with taking on this case comes some issues for Finch, for instance people will become very upset with Finch for being Tom’s lawyer. People will begin to question Finch because he took on the case of defending a black man for “a crime he obviously committed.” Finch has have courage to be Tom’s lawyer because he is defending a black man, who during this time were no where near sufficient to whites, who is being accused of a crime he obviously did not commit. Everyone except for Atticus Finch is oblivious to the fact that this case can easily be in Tom favor because there is concrete evidence displaying that Tom, in fact, had nothing to do with the crimes committed. Courage is displayed in this character because he takes on a case that has a success rate of about zero, but that does not stop Finch who is determined to change the minds of everyone and prove Tom’s innocence.
