“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are”- E.E. Cummings. Courage, by definition, is the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is also strength in the face of pain or grief. Courage is shone through the characters of Romeo and Juliet through their tragic story of how deeply in love they are, but that love being forbidden. Also, in To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the character of Atticus Finch has courage to teach his children, Jem and Scout about diversity, innocence, and new perspectives. In The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls, Jeannette is raised with the constant lack of food, clothes, and sometimes even shelter, the Walls kids have to learn how to be self sufficient. Courage influences the characters to bond with each other. In The Glass Castle, the characters are influenced to bond with each other because of the courage that they have to push through the monstrous events that face them. Rex, a two faced father, shows one side of love and compassion, and a darker side, his drunken neglective side. One night when Rex is drunk and incapable of making rational decisions, him and his wife Rosemary have a disagreement. With all of the children in the back of the vehicle, pregnant Rosemary gets out of the car because she is so angry. Rex in his rage begins hurling their van towards her, nearly hitting and squashing her into a rock. Jeannette and the kids “braced one another with our arms like we always did when dad went on some wild chase that we knew would get bumpy” (Walls 43). Brian, Lori, and Jeannette were frightened, and rightfully so. Rex nearly killed Rosemary, and the baby she was carrying. The kids huddled together. While separate, the kids are almost hopeless, with only a miniscule amount of courage, together they are stronger. Their courage to push through the hardships they face within their family bonds them and
