That summer, everything had changed for Melinda Sordino. Her peers would not view her the same consequently her freshman year would be off to a rocky start, but when the past is uncovered things will change.Through the book Speak by Laurie Halsey Anderson we live through the sad story of a depressed teen who enters high school with no friends and is hated by her peers. We are able to understand the difficulty high school teenagers face, specifically when faced with something so big.There is no doubt that Melinda's secret has courage written all over it and to share with her judgmental peers is even harder, this book really encourages readers to think because this book had Melinda and courage written all over it, we are just taught to look at courage in new perspectives, with different idea of what courage can mean.

Art class was a huge part of Melinda’s life. A class that as Mr.Freeman describes(her art teacher),art is a class where you can touch the part of you that you've never dared look at before(pg.10). Melinda was given something to draw and study for the rest of the class, her object was a tree. Her first thoughts were confused on the purpose of the tree, and how something with no importance could have such a big meaning. I think throughout art class Melinda showed noble acts of courage. The first reason Melinda showed courage through art was her grade. Often to younger kids, especially those who just enter high school don’t realize the affects grade can have. Throughout the book Melinda's grades were never good. Her grades often reflected d’s,c’s and occasionally F’s, but one grade remained constant. Art, Art always remained at an A. You might be asking why he graded remained at an A, well this relates into the second reason Melinda showed courage through art. Melinda had a whirlwind of feelings similar to a typhoon. It could go up and down, but never one constant feeling. These feelings were displayed in art. Although she was frustrated with her trees, because they were never,”perfect”. I think this relates to real life because no one is perfect and we all have things that are us unique and we all have a story to tell that helps us grow, much like the tree the emir elevates Melinda added the more experiences she had, and her finally product of her tree had a ton of trees which was admire the reflect of her freshman year.
