What is courage? Every person exhibits courage in their own way throughout their lives. One of the most recognizable examples of courage is bravery in a military setting. Other examples include facing dangers for the sake of others, facing social ridicule, and being fearless in the face of death. People such as Chris Kyle, Cecilia Balli, Caitlyn Jenner, and Austin Armstrong have shown courage with these methods. Courage is a less complicated term than perceived; courage is facing a fear or difficulty.
Chris Kyle was the deadliest sniper in American history with over 160 confirmed kills. Kyles’ numerous actions of bravery on the battlefield show his immense courage. Providing overwatch for marines in Fallujah, the marine team he was protecting became trapped in an alley as guerillas fired at them. Chris ran down the alley directly into enemy gunfire. He was able to provide enough cover fire for the marines to escape; as he prepared to escape, he noticed a marine with gunshots to his legs. Instead of securing his own life, he ran to the marine, picking him up and running to safety, despite the enemies firing at him directly. While running with the marine on his back, he stated, “I could see shrapnel coming off the wall” (Greenblatt). Kyle could have easily dropped the marine and fired back, but instead risked his own life by continuing to run with the marine.
