Courage, it is defined to be able to do something that frightens one, which makes courage hard to come by. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee courage is present in multiple characters. Atticus shows determination through his job and his family. Miss Maudie Atkinson shows her bravery by deciding to state her opinion when it could make her life miserable. And Link Diez courageously stands up to a racist man to do what's right. These three characters show tremendous amounts of courage through the entire book of To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus is a strong father who works a hard job doing the best to raise his children being a prime example of courage in the meantime. Being a lawyer, it takes guts to defend people. Especially in a poor, racist town like Maycomb. When Atticus was put in charge of Tom Robinson's case it was hard. Under the circumstances that he already knew the outcome of the trial before it started. He has seen this happen earlier, it is “‘simply because we're licked 100 years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,’”(Lee101). Who most would have thought to just be average. But Mr. Diez happen to have employed both Tom and his wife, Helen Robinson. After the case, when Tom is in jail, he protects Tom's wife from the man harassing her (who also put her husband in jail). During the trial, he was upset with how things were going, and ”’ just want the whole lot of [everyone]to know one thing right now. that boy’s worked for me eight years and I ain't had a speck o’trouble out of him. not a speck.’” (261). This shows he has courage because he wasn't afraid to stand up in front of the entire courthouse and let them know how he felt.
