Discuss your personal process regarding this experience (before, during, after the interview). Note your concerns, what issues made you uncomfortable, what thoughts came up for you regarding session content and your own response to it, etc. My personal process regarding this experience before the interview, allowed myself preparation so that I can be ready to present myself in a counseling and client environment. During the interview, as the client verbalized her issue to me I became sadden inside and felt sympathy for the couple. After the interview, I observed the client in a more understanding and accepting place. This session, allowed me to understand that I’m human and as a counselor, stories will be heart felt. I wouldn’t be human, if I didn’t

When taking the class Foundations of Human Behavior I did not realize how much this class would become an integral part of the skills I am learning. In my key experience I was able to watch human behavior on many different levels. I was able to get an intimate look at how behaviors affect the client's and relationships with those around her. I believe that this client is resting in Erikson's Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt stage of development. She has struggled with feeling of inadequacy as well as low self esteem.…

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

but I took a deep breath and allowed my client to share with me something that had been bothering him. I showed Matt that I was listening to him and understanding they way he felt. I made sure that he realized his feelings were ok for him to have and allowed him to share something that appeared to me he had been trying to hold in. After doing this I feel like Matt felt that he could trust me and that I was being genuine and present in our session. Although overwhelming to me I felt that this moved our counseling session in a positive direction.…

It is in this session that I helped the client to focus on the wider issues around the problem. This I achieved through challenging the client positively by asking him if he thought whether the situation would still have ended the same way it was if he did things differently. I also inquired whether he thought there were reasons that made the individual behave the way she did. These questions also allowed my client to express his emotions regarding the situation which would be helpful for him since he would be able to release the tension he had concerning the situations. This was through talking about the thoughts and the feelings he had stored in his mind.…

Getting practice using the techniques we have been learning in real time, with a real person, made the content more concrete. I was conscious of employing solution focused techniques as much as possible in the short time we had to conduct the interview. While my performance produced mixed results, the practice was a good start to becoming an expert using the technique.
