To begin, the author, Reid, spent 5 years in Japan, where he served as The Washington Post’s Tokyo bureau chief. In this book, Reid explores Confucianism and its powerful ethical system. Confucianism is a system of ethics, education, and statesmanship taught by Confucius. His disciplines stress love, harmony, respect, and group unity in the Asian lifestyle (Reid, T. 1999). Confucian was adamant about calling things by their real names (Reid, T. 1999). Properly identifying something gives it meaning and creates harmony. Families stay together, children value their education, and people respect and trust one another. People are harmonious and knowledgeable and create less harm and crime.
