Conflict Theory Conflict theory suggests that deviant behaviors result from social, political or material inequalities within a certain social group (Pawluch, 2016). This theory was first introduced by Karl Marx, who stated that society is in a constant state of conflict due to the competition for control over limited resources (Pawluch, 2016). More specifically, societal order is maintained by domination and power; the tensions within society are a direct result of the unequal distribution of resources, status and power, becoming the driving force for social change. With President-Elect Donald Trump in the transition period before taking office, many people are unsure of what the future holds for the democratic state. With that being said, many across the country have taken to the streets in the days following the election as a visible sign of their disapproval with the President-to-be. This article focuses on these protests as a clear indicator of the problem within American politics. This article is a perfect example of Social Conflict Theory. Over the span of the 15 month long campaign, the Republican got away with racist, sexist and derogatory language that, given any other situation, would have lead to some form of severe punishment. Instead, his name will now be added onto the list of elites who have been given the privilege to rule one of the most powerful nations in the world.
