A concept is a thought or an idea. It is a general idea about a thing or group of things, derived from precise instances or happenings. Concept was borrowed from Late Latin, from Latin concipere "to take in, conceive, and receive. A concept is an idea conceived in the mind, to take an idea into the mind. A general idea derived or inferred from specific occurrences or incidences. Something formed in the mind; a thought or notion. Some concepts can be prevailing thinking tools even when they are not at all fully understood. Concepts may be more or less clear, depending on how well it is perceived in our minds. A prototype is a model used to test and evaluate an experiment or design. On the other hand, prototype in psychology means generally, an item, person or event believed to be the typical example or representation to stand for that category. The prototype theory is a cognitive science theory developed by Eleanor Rosch in the early 1970s, with help from other experts in the field of cognitive psychology. In Rosch's theory, people classify items and concepts based on a prototype or an ideal representation of that category. For instance, the concept of dog is often characterized by fur, a tail, and paws. When discussing or thinking about dogs, people think of classic, stereotypical examples such as german shepherds or spaniels, because it represents the prototype. While a wolf or a jackal might also meet the criteria of a dog, these animals are not prototypical of a dog. According to the prototype theory, certain features of a category have equal status, and so, examples that represent all or most of those features become the prototype for that particular category. Things that do not share the majority of these features may still belong to that category, but they do not represent the prototype. How each person applies prototype theory to categorizing concepts and language differs based on experience and cognitive development.
