Ways the texts My Last Duchess and Porphyria’s Lover relate.

Texts that are written by the same author may typically be about the same things or they may be related in some way. This goes for the two stories that this essay is written about. In Robert Browning’s texts Porphyria’s Lover and My Last Duchess there are many ways that these two stories compare and contrast to each other.

Firstly, we will talk about the women and typically how they are both the same, but different. The women both seem like they are uncaring about what is happening to them. It is like they do not want to fight with the men because they either can’t or they just don’t care they are dying. In Porphyria’s Lover (lines 39-41) the speaker says, “I found

The men feel no remorse about the deaths. In My Last Duchess the speaker is telling us about his dead wife. From this story we can tell that she did not just die of natural causes… No this man was crazy and he had her killed. (lines lines 45-46) “I gave commands; Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands as if alive.” Something that both of these men share in common is the motive. The reason that these men killed their women was because of one thing and one thing only, jealousy. Both of these men were jealous of the way these women treated other men. Ways they were different: the class of the men. The man from Last Duchess is very rich and he is very powerful that is how he had her killed. Unlike the man that is in Porphyria’s Lover he is very poor and we can tell this by the way his surroundings are …show more content…
The men and the women both seem like they were expecting the deaths to come sooner or later. The reasons they did this are some what different though. The guy in Last Duchess did this because he thought she may have been cheating on him because she was always smiling so he wanted to get rid of this. He didn’t like the fact that she was always happy even when it wasn’t him making her happy. The man in Porphyria’s Lover some what does this out of love for her. Her one wish was to be his forever, she said this as she was snuggling up with him when she got inside and sat down on his couch. So the one way that he can make her his forever is by killing her. But he doesn’t really think this is a bad thing because it is what she wanted and, “And yet God has not said a word!” (line 60) So this must mean that what he is doing is fine to do and that is was an act of love and not jealousy.

Overall, there is many ways that a story can be related to each other. Especially when they are written by the same person. Like the stories My Last Duchess and Porphyria’s Lover, they are related in many different ways. But with ways the stories are related there are even more ways they are not related. So that shows in these two stories, that were written by Robert Browning, as
