Who is to Blame?
Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous love stories and probably will be for a very long time. It is a basic story about two star-crossed lovers. They eventually get married, but their families are feuding and Romeo gets banished. The two both end up killing themselves in the name of love. The one question always thought about when this story comes up is: Who is responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s death? Many people may say it is their families feuding to blame. In Act 2 scene 1, Romeo begs the Friar to marry him and Juliet. He finally says yes after saying, “For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancor to pure love.” He is basically saying he thinks the marriage could stop the two families from feuding. Juliet was later forced To marry a man picked by her parents. The day before the wedding she refuses because she is already married. Her father says she is dead to him if she doesn’t. The Friar comes up with this “bright idea” that would help her escape to the banished Romeo. The Friar fails to deliver the plan to Romeo and he soon comes back to find Juliet what he thinks is dead. He was never told she was given a drink that would make her seem dead for 42 hours. Romeo, thinking Juliet is dead, kills himself. Juliet wakes up to dead Romeo and also kills herself. This is why the Friar is a main reason for Romeo and Juliet’s death. Juliet is just as responsible for their deaths as the Friar is. Juliet would do anything to be with her banished husband Romeo. She went to extreme measures and agreed to the Friar’s plan to fake her death. She wakes up to Romeo killing himself. In act 5 scene 3, Juliet says, “What’s here? So many people have done things leading to Romeo and Juliet’s death, it’s too hard to tell who is the most responsible. Either way, in the end they both ended up dying. Romeo and Juliet’s parents made up in the end. Juliet’s father apologizes first in act 5 scene 3. He says, “ O brother Montague, give me thy hand. This is my daughter’s dowry, for no more can I demand.” Romeo’s father then replies with, “ But I can forgive thee more, for I will raise her statue in pure gold, that while Verona by that name is known, there shall no figure at such worth be set as that of true and faithful Juliet.” The story ends on a happy note by ending any feuding happening between the two
