While the Xbox One is the shape of a large black box, the PS4, significantly smaller, attempts to appear futuristic with a “slanted sandwich” look. As for ports, the PS4 has an HDMI out, S/PDIF (audio), two USB (v. 3.0), Ethernet, and an AUX (for camera) line (Swider). The Xbox One includes all of these along with an HDMI in and IR blaster port, making it the more feature packed of the two consoles when it comes to connectivity (For example, cable can be viewed through the Xbox One). It is important to note though, that the Xbox One does require a separate power brick, while the PS4 does not (Swider). In terms of power consumption, the PS4 uses about 10 watts in standby mode and 135 watts in gameplay. These consoles, however, are not the same “box”. The Xbox One is truly a home entertainment system. With more ports, better suited software (streaming, spilt screen, etc.), and the ability to run cable T.V., the Xbox One is designed to be the crown of the living room. The PS4, however, is a gamer’s console. With better performance, a simpler OS, and a smaller frame, it fits the needs of a gamer a lot better than the Xbox One. It also cost less to play on the PS4, with online play costing about $50 a year vs. Xbox One costing $60 a year. It is because of these reasons that the better gaming console between these two eighth generation consoles is the PlayStation
