Flatland a romance of many dimensions is an 1884 novella by Edwin Abbott. Has been a widely known book in the world of sciences and math lovers. Due to the fact the book is taking place in a two dimension world. The book was so popular that in 2007 the book got a movie directed by Dano Johnson and Jeffrey Travis. The movie flatlands was a very interesting piece to watch but it was very different compared to the book. In this essay I will show you how the book and the movie of flatland share similarities but also differences. There are three major cagagories that I will be separating this paper into. The first part will be the roles of women in flat land along with how the angles place shapes in a cast system. And how the book and movie are …show more content…
For example in the book the equilateral triangles were soldiers and the lowest class of workmen. While the middle class were makeup of equilateral triangles. The professional men and gentlemen are made up of squares and pentagons. And finally the nobility’s. Were grouped due to their six or more sides. The more the shape was to a circle the higher class there were in. The movie dose a good job conveying this society rule. In the movie the circles were in charge. While the squares were office workers and the triangles were either solders or factor workers. You see this when Aruther square is taking his granddaughter to school and we see an overview of the city seeing triangles grouped together in a factory looking place. Another great example of the movie and the book using the society aspect would have to be who are in charge in the movie. In the movies Aruther square was consider a professional/gentlemen not to high but not to low in the society tree. He was over seen by Mrs. Helios a circle. Mrs. Helios was not only a boss but she acted as if she was better than him and the other employees in her work place. This is due to the fact that she was a circle and …show more content…
One major aspect of the movie that differs from the book would have to be the color revelation. The color revolution was caused when an oval decided to color its inside red. This les to other shapes doing the same. This lead to more shapes following which led to mixed dyeing. With the civil authority did not like at all. In the movie the shapes are all different colors from red, blue, purple. Instead of explain why they are different color and how the authority would take this. It looks as if the shapes are born colored already. For example Aruther square granddaughter is orange. Which shows to me that the shapes are already colored when they are born I do not know if the color revolution has already happen or if they have been that way since the day of birth no information was given during the movie on the color revolution. A thing that the book and movie do very well at comparing is how other dimension are perceived in flatland. In flatland talking about other demission is like talking about religion in our society. If a person who is doubtful about god to a religious friend his friend might call him unholy or get mad about his belief. That same thinking is in flatland but about different universes. For example the leaders of flatland have made it law to never speak against their dimension and thought of other dimension are unthinkable. If a shape is found preaching about the

When watching movies and reading books, there are often many comparisons that can be made throughout. One example of this is seen in the book A Separate Peace by John Knowles and the 1989 movie Dead Poets Society. Although there are a vast amount of similarities between these two works, there are three prevailing comparisons between the characters. They include: the comparisons between Neil Perry and Finny, Todd Anderson and Gene Forrester, and finally, Neil’s father (Mister Perry) and Brinker’s father (Mister Hadley). These main points demonstrate one key example of how books can be similar to movies.…

Joseph Iccari Prompt #1 Extra Credit Assignment Flatland Essay :) Throughout the novel Flatland, the author, Edwin Abbott, uses a variety of shapes and figures to distinguish the difference in social status along with gender superiority. Abbott implies multiple hints of social criticism and satire to portray a multitude of perspectives on the difference in social rankings along with authoritative figures while using mathematical allegory to relate the story to a time in which he was living in. The world that the author creates in the book is composed of a rigid social structure, which was a satire of the world of Abbott's day which was in the 1880s.…

The American Delusion The traditional ideology of “The American Dream” is the archetypal configuration that through hard work you can acquire and accrue wealth. Any deviance from this 1950s societal construction is unsavory, and those without the same opportunities are pushed to their limits to achieve the dream. In contemporary modern society, the pressures of this rigor system are outlined by student debt, financial bantams, and the writing In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. Beginning a college career with a mountain of debt is not ideal, but is the reality for every student wishing to attend college. Since 1985, costs have risen exponentially in the past decade equalizing an increase of almost 500% and creating a stagnant counterculture of debt-ridden Americans (Odlanc 1).…

Ray Bradbury wrote many books that most would describe them as poetic like that involved fantasy, and described things or events thoroughly, among those books came one called Fahrenheit 451. Many people disprove with the way Bradbury writes because they believe he lacks knowledge in science and they accuse him of narrative inconsistencies. Most strongly disagree with those people and approve that Bradbury's way of writing is unique and really makes lots of connections with our world today. His books and one in specific, Fahrenheit 451, leaves a powerful message for readers today because of the similarities between our world and the novel's world. People in the novel’s society get so accustomed to it, they are blindly obedient and the government can be able to take stuff from them without them even noticing or caring.…

Movies have always had a way of bringing to life the written word. When a modern movie tries to portray the thoughts of long age, sometimes the perceptions of the modern world infiltrate the storyline. These perceptions can be seen when analyzing the movie versus the book of Solomon Northup’s 12 Years A Slave. Director Steve McQueen and screenwriter John Ridley were able to infuse the essence of Northup’s book, while also adding the views from now with regard to slavery.…
