Community Health Observation For the community health observation assignment, I attended Kayla’s class called “Eating Budgetarian Store Tour” at New Seasons Market. The class consisted of a few strategies to stretch your food dollars. Affordable super foods, shopping the bulk bins and planning well to prevent food waste were taught to students. All classes offered at New Seasons are free. However, registration is required prior to class. Students met up in a small room, on the second floor of the store. The nutritionist waited for a few minutes after class was supposed to start to see if more people would show up. Students were then taken to the first floor and provided with a goody bag that consisted of a market shopping bag, grocery list, cooking guide on grains and beans, do it yourself (DIY) tips and tricks, a shopping guide, and a coupon for 10% off an entire New Seasons purchase. …show more content…
Different food items in each section were discussed. The class initiated in the produce section. She gave students tips on purchasing produce in season and freeze. Also, purchasing vegetables with tops still on, such as carrots and beets and using their greens in recipes. Students were advised to purchase value packs of meat to save up to 25% on meat purchases. Also, choosing bone-in cuts of meat and saving bones for broth instead of purchasing broth. The top 10 budget superfoods under $5 covered in class were raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar, sea vegetables, sardines, cabbage, beans and lentils, nutritional yeast, eggs, green tea, mushrooms, and celery. Tips provided to students were not to shop hungry, shop local pantry before the store, shop the New Seasons Market weekly ad, make a plan and a list of food items, use ingredients in a different way, and double recipes
