Christmas is a time to rejoice, a time to love, and a time to give thanks. With all the advertisements and black friday deals for presents, the true meaning of Christmas has drifted away from many people’s mind. Receiving presents is something to look forward to and be grateful for, however not everyone gets this experience. Not everyone wakes up to beautifully wrapped presents topped with string and a shiny bow. DEcember is one of the best months to give back to the community and spend Christmas cheer. A few years ago, I signed up for a community service event at my church. Walking into church that day, I had no idea what awaited me. After Santa asked what they each wanted for Christmas, he took two wrapped presents from under the tree. Both of their faces lite up and they kept repeating thank you. They urgently ran back to our table and ripped the paper off of the gifts. David got a Star Wars action figure and Gmeralda got a purse making craft kit. As they were in awe looking at their presents, Gmeralda then told me, “this is the best day of my life”. She went on to explain that last year she did not receive anything for Christmas besides a small plush toy. Today she even brought that stuffed animal with her as it 's one of her only toys. This moment made me realize how much I take for granite. I have a loving family, roof over my head, three meals a day, and many materialistic items. Somehow there are times where I still look for even more. At such a young age, David and Gmeralda learned to be grateful and appreciative of all that they do have. They understood the true meaning of Christmas more than most adults I knew. As the kids were at the craft table making a paper wreath, I had some time to talk to their mother alone. She shared that she cannot afford any gifts this year, so she was so grateful
