Famous Social Activist Desmond Tutu, once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it is those little bits of good put all together that overwhelm the world.” In my experience, I have certainly found this to be true. Life is a blessing to me I am so lucky and privileged to be able to have an education, loving friends and family, and a place to call my home. Lately, through the stress of my junior year of high school, I have been forgetting to connect to my true self. Staying up late for assignments and keeping up with extracurriculars has made it difficult to remember some of the most important things in life. As humans we are all caught up in our day to day problems and routines, thus, we aren’t able to play a significant role in the …show more content…
I concur in the quote by Mother Teresa, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” Even though I myself have not made a direct global change, the work I have done through Interact and the advisory committee of Sunnyvale, I have been able to give back to the world I am so privileged to live in. Doing community service gives me utmost satisfaction and keeps me grounded. In December, with my advisory committee, I wrote Christmas cards to orphans who are not fortunate enough to spend the holidays with their families and we ran a gift drive to let these children know that they are loved and they matter. Seeing the smiles and laughter on these kid’s faces gave me so much joy and even though it wasn’t much at all, I know that it made a difference in their day. I am so lucky and blessed to live the life I am living today and while spending one day with these kids can never be enough, I know that I made a difference in their day. Before joining the advisory committee and Interact, I always thought that the only way to make a difference is to raise money and directly make change. However, one of the biggest lessons I have learned is that it can be as simple as a smile to empower change in the

Kids across the nation are standing out and making a difference. Whether its just picking up around the community or starting a foundation people can make a difference. Many people think kids are just in the way and don’t ever actually make a difference in their community. Blare Gooch started with a teddy bear, Alex Scott started with a cup of lemonade, and Zach Hunter started with a few pennies around his house. The smallest things can turn into a life changing difference.…

Be the change you wish to see in the world; Mahatma Gandhi's words of wisdom still ring true to me in my everyday life. His words invoke me to look within myself and evaluate how my good deeds can somehow be powerful enough to change the world. Volunteering at Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls kindled a fire within me and made me realize that I will not tolerate being a bystander in the world; I must be proactive in order to see results. This center allowed me to see how simply packing, sorting, and shining shoes can help a young child's get to school easier, allow a young soccer play to sign up for their local team, or protect a child from walking on harsh terrain while trying to collect water. The reason why I volunteer is because I wish for the child's troubles to be nonexistent, I want to live in a world where people don’t have to worry about having a function pair of shoes.…

The hardest thing in life is to humble yourself and to realize that the world doesn’t revolve around you. Although most people in the world believe the purpose in their life is to eat, sleep, breathe, and enjoy their life, they are wrong. The purpose of life is simply to leave the world a better place. I was always taught do a good turn daily through boy scouts, but what I have learned over the years is that you should help when ever you can, not only when it is convenient to you. Through my efforts in helping the community I have showed leadership qualities and my character in several ways.…

As I glance around my surroundings atop a comfortable bed, I observe a desk equipped with a computer, a drawing desk ladened with paper, and a lamp upon a bedside table. I get up off of my bed and leave my bedroom to find four other family members, my parents and two younger siblings. I can but help to feel that I am extraordinarily gifted and privileged to be given all that I have. Throughout the world there are injustices, unmet needs, and sufferings that happen everyday of which I have never had to experience. It is for this reason that myself and countless other volunteers strive to alleviate the pains and struggles of others as best I can.…

The need for food in my community inspired me to become more active in volunteering at the food pantry. In the town that I live in, over 300 families come to this food pantry every month to receive food for the month. Many of the head of households in the families are unemployed and receive government assistance. It pains me to see some of the circumstances that individual people and families are in who come to the food bank, but it gives me great joy to see how I am a part of helping them overcome their need for food, even if it is for only a short period of time. The amount gratification that some of the people have that come to the pantry for food is rewarding in numerous ways.…

As a high school student, I believed the myth that I was just a teenager, that I couldn't make a significant change in the world or in my school. The belief that I couldn't influence the world caused me to hold my tongue when I saw unmet needs. At my school, there are no social events and the majority of our students are bused in from other cities. We tend to lack a sense of community because unless you're on a sports team, there's no reason to stay after school with friends. This was an unmet need I wished to be apart of changing.…

Something that most people don’t know about me is that about once a month I feed homeless people. Over four years ago, my grandfather and great uncle invited me to go with them to help distribute food to homeless people on the street. The first time I went with them I realized that ordinary people like us could directly help people who are hungry. Seeing how I could help take away someone’s hunger pain for even a few hours made it all worthwhile. Since then, I have bought and packaged food (usually a sandwich, chips, and a cookie) about once a month and get my parents or another relative to drive me downtown to pass out bags of food to homeless people in the street.…

My volunteer group called TAPS held a carnival and clothing drive at a women’s shelter called Love-a-Child, which is for mothers and their children undergoing a rough patch in their lives. As I spent time with the families, I saw they were ecstatic when receiving stuffed animals and baked goods, as this event was a treat for them. These observations made me more aware of the ignorance I had been seeing the world through. I and countless other teens have been shielded from world struggles with an illusion of endless luxury and indulgence. In our everyday lives, we are so focused on our next math test or the latest gossip, that we are blind to all the global issues impacting people, animals, and the environment.…

Ever since I have moved to Little Rock, I've been enrolled in a humanitarian program that connects people who wish to share and help underprivileged children to kids who need support. The program is called Children's International. My mother wasn't able to always buy me books I wanted or the jacket I needed, but Children's International was able to provide those things. All I had to do was go take a few pictures and write a thank you letter to the sponsors that donate.…

This essay is going to be about two people I have come to know in my lifetime, who have inspired me to be the person that I am today. The first story is about an extremely hard working individual that relied on their morals and strive for success to get through high school on the honor roll or better every time. I've known this person my whole life. Always doing their homework, having a smile on their face and saying “hi” to everyone in the hallways, this person was someone I wanted to be around.…

I have heard the saying life is not fair a million times, but it never really affected me until recently. Most everything in my life has not always gone my way; from talents, to sports, to even luck, I just cannot seem to get what I want. Some people tend to have it better than others, because they have everything handed down to them. It is just the way life works. I am not saying I have it the worst, because I know I do not, but sometimes it is really frustrating to see people flourish at everything while I sit there and try, but yet do not succeed.…

What is it that defines me? What are my views on the world around me? The answers to these questions, if asked prior to coming to college, would have been mediocre and uninteresting. I would have given answers like “I’m defined by my uniqueness, and my ability to observe others” and “I think that the world around me is in a difficult state”. However, even after the short amount of time being in this new environment, I am able to recognize that my perspectives on life and about life have changed drastically.…

I grew as a student in the area of knowledge. Before this semester I never knew that if you put a gummy bear in normal water that it figure would absorb the water. If you put a gummy bear with salt than the gummy bear has competition to collect water because of the salt. Now I know that water moves from high to low concentration. Just like in the gummy bear lab cells ask for water when they’re dehydrated.…
