At the time, the Terry Fox fundraiser was about to start and my teacher asked if anyone was able to help the World Issues Group after school. The World Issues Group is a student-run club in which individuals tackle daily issues that occur in the world by issuing fundraisers and raising awareness throughout the school.

This campaign allowed students and staff to donate unused products and gifts to various families in need during the holidays. As the coordinators of the World Issues group, we collect, wrap and send the items to the local bank which are then shipped. I had the chance to work with families and listen to their memorable stories, sharing the joy of the holidays in a new way.

Year after year, the World Issues Group continue to achieve success. As Grade 10 and 11 began, I gained more experience, communication and management skills. I was confident and began to teach younger students and most importantly, invite them into our family. I was also privileged to become one of the leaders and supervisors. This opportunity gave me that chance to showcase my creative side by creating banners and posters to raise awareness about current issues around the world.

During my high school experience, the World Issues Group has certainly converted innovation into reality. As a grade nine student, I thought it was only established to make a difference in the world, however, it was more than that.

We created a large family that continues to grow by the year, setting examples for the students in the coming years to

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. This year has been my first year participating in Global Girls and I can, without hesitation, say that several of the conversations held during the meetings have been some of the most honest, crisp discussions I have taken a part in. My personal belief in the great significance of these kinds of conversations is one of the driving factors for my interest in being co head of Global Girls. If selected as co-head, I will really focus on creating more of these organic conversations that speak about the core of an issue. The importance of brisk, articulate conversations was really emphasized to me during my participation in the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) in December of last year. I was chosen, along with four other Brearey girls, to go to this conference in Atlanta, Georgia and I had the privilege of engaging in conversations with teenagers from around the country about different social…
