Chilli Cookoff Assignment

For this assignment, I attended a Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) chili cook off event followed by a student dance. This event was held at Eastern Randolph high school in Ramseur, North Carolina. This is a small school surrounded primarily by agriculture and Ramseur is a small town of less than 2,000. The community members are mostly alumni of the school and have had generations attend Eastern. Because of this connection, the community is big supporters of school athletic events and other performances. The event occurred on this past Saturday, November 14th from 5pm-7pm. The Chili Cookoff consisted of various community groups, school organizations, and individuals entering the contest. There was a panel of judges, the principal,

When it was still in operation, one of my favorite treats was to sit outside at Alice Waters' Cafe Fanny and eat beignets with jam while my mom drank Cafe Au Lait. Growing up in a food-centric place made Alice Waters and her farm-to-table movement common knowledge to me. I imagine myself sitting with Alice at Cafe Fanny asking questions about her life as an activist. I wonder how Alice knew how to turn her passion for food justice into action.…

For this assignment, I went to McAlister 's Deli on Thursday, November 17, 2016. I had been to a few McAlister 's before, but I had never dined at the Cape Girardeau location. Many individuals, myself included, will always have family members that can be defined as unusual. Whether it be at family barbecues or even out on a vacation, these family members are customary to making themselves stand out. Uncle Arturo (or 'Art' for short) stands about 6 feet, 2 inches tall, has short and curly black hair that has begun to recede, and has stomach that's as hard as a rock although it bulges out to be as big as a basketball. Uncle Art is notoriously known for his colossal appetite, his teenage mindset, as well as his mannerisms while intoxicated. It was a tranquil but immensely scorching Tuesday morning in Palm Springs.…

The leadership role in which I have had the greatest positive influence in has been as the Fine Arts Commissioner in ASB. As the Fine Arts Commissioner, it is my responsibility to showcase the performing arts in any way I possibly can, and while I have successfully done that, I’ve also successfully created a new rally that now occurs every year. Even though last year was my first year on ASB, I still made an impact on my school by taking charge of said new rally. My ASB director wanted to try having an on-campus winter dance before winter break and we figured the best way to promote the new dance would be through a rally. In addition, my ASB director didn’t want to have cheer and dance perform in this rally, for they perform in every other…

I had the pleasure of attending the first Asa Gray picnic of the year. The activity was supposed to be held at Utica College’s Rose Garden from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on September thirtieth, but it regrettably was rained out, and the event was instead held in the Donahue Auditorium at the same time and on the same day. I had a lot of fun at this activity, and I look forward to attending more Asa Gray meetings in the future due to this event. After much deliberation on my part, I ultimately decided to participate in this activity because it seemed like fun, and I wanted to meet some of the other science majors. In the beginning, I had no intention of going to the picnic, but my twin sister Skylar is a biology major, so it was mandatory for her…

Since I wasn't able to visit my eighth graders on our usual schedule (my teaching class had an in-class day to reconnect with each other and learn information for our teaching exam- sad face.) , I felt very happy to go visit my kids today! As I entered Ms. Fentress' room when her AI students were exiting, I realized that these kids are just like high school kids. One boy was jamming out to his music, and even rapped for his classmates. It's always funny to see how their distinct personalities intertwine with one-another to make it a friendly atmosphere.…

Throughout my years of high school, I have been involved in numerous volunteer opportunities that have given me different experiences. I have done everything from sitting outside Walmart in 10 degree weather in mid December raising money for UNICEF, to laughing while playing connect four with senior citizens in local nursing homes. However, one of the most meaningful things I have done has been volunteering in my town’s VFW post. My passion for helping those at the VFW stemmed from my entrance into the National Honor Society, and since then, it has grown to be one of my favorite volunteer activities. I am currently the NHS Chairperson for the VFW dinners that occur every friday from September to May.…

On a day that was supposed to be filled with love, a tragedy occurred that broke the hearts of millions. In Florida, a Parkland school shooting took place on February 14, 2018. 17 were killed and 17 were injured- making it one of the deadliest school massacres. Across the nation, many students and faculty members were affected heavily and questioned the safety within their schools, so they realized it was time to do something to make a change. I'll admit- when I first say my peers creating flyers mentioning protests and marches, I thought it was a bit crazy!…

Walking into the Winterball was an experience like no other. Hot cocoa and the smell of freshly baked cookies filled your nose as you entered the beautifully decorated staircase to the cafeteria. Students from freshman to seniors laughed and squealed loudly as they observed the holiday themed outfits of friends, old and new. From the most formal attire to the most casual ugly sweaters and comfy onesies, students confidently took pictures with others in the far right area of the cafeteria. A few tables and chairs were set next to the dance floor so those who danced too hard or just wanted to eat food and talk with friends could chill out under the snowflake decorated ceiling.…

One evening after I had gotten off work, one of my roommates, Natalie, and I hiked our way to the Orchard Lodge where they were having a Resident Assistant event which was decorating recycling bins for our own individual apartments. The RAs who put on events for all of the lodges spend a lot of time preparing for the event and it means a lot to them when students attend and enjoy the time spent at the event. The resident assistant for Orchard, Jenna Bieker, who was hosting the event, was very intergenic and so happy to see all of the people who showed up for the event (it was mostly girls, of course) because she said it was extremely important to her because she has a passion about getting people together and interacting, as well as a passion for recycling. My roommates and I are also avid recyclers so we figured it would be a fun idea to decorate a cute bin for our apartment.…

The subject was a senior male, between the ages of 50 and 60, also Caucasian. Before doing this task, I felt empowered, overjoyed, this journey has really been touching to me.
