I think the process of developing and reviewing and IEP is just as equally significant as the actual legal document due to the fact that development and the review of the IEP is stated in the legal document. The legal document of the IEP states and list the student’s accommodations, special education services, strengths, weakness, and the student’s goals. Mrs. Taylor needs to remember the development of the review of an IEP is highly important, and that her views and thoughts of her student’s goals and needs are listed in the legal document of the IEP, which is how her student will receive his/her special education services. I feel it is highly recommended that the student’s parents and guardians should be included in process of developing and reviewing their student’s IEP.…

Ethical challenges can occur during collaboration between a parent and a special education teacher regarding services provided to a student with a disability. One challenging scenario would be when a parent does not want a child to receive any special education services though the child has qualified. We do not understand the parents mental model with a different aspect of the social world then ourselves. To insure the child is receiving the proper services it is important for teachers to attempt to establish a paradigm shift (Amatea, 2013). Special education law as well as many other laws in which we function through at times can present terms that bring to question their intent and/or meaning. Chapter 2 titled “IDEA Terminology” attempts to provide the reader a clarification of 19 key terms that are listed in Section 504 and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004. The focus is interpreting the terms within law that Congress proposed as well as the presentation of court cases that further support the definitions presented. The content presented within the chapter that focused on proving educational benefit provided insightful information. From my fieldwork hours I have gained an understanding that IEP goals must be measurable however I was not aware of the factors that you need to consider in developing these goals to ensure the IEP is providing meaningful educational benefit to the student.…
To get parents involved in the IEP or transition process, first parents need to feel comfortable. Sometimes this may mean that the parents are not native to the English language. Communication needs to done in the parent’s native language. Interpreters can help make the parents feel comfortable, while also communicating the IEP or transition process to them. I think educators need to make sure that the meeting is set at a suitable time and place that works for the parents.…
Once the parents of disabled children are discussed, Chapter 3 discusses how to create and maintain a professional connection with the parents. This sections includes tips dealing with how to properly communicate with the parents, which include tips that will make the parents feel comfortable, focused, and have a say in their child’s education. The issue of stereotyping can occur within educators when trying to contact and discuss with some of these parents, but educators must refrain from these biases because they will create barriers that can ruin another resource for the exceptional child. Chapter 3 also provides some advice for discussions with parents who are not willing to work with the educators, and the main suggestion is to hold dialogue instead of arguments. Dialogue focuses on sharing and explaining information, instead of harshly explaining reasons and opinions.…

Matt is a 5 year old autistic male, who lives with his parents and older brother in Toronto. He was diagnosed at three with Autism Spectrum Disorder; he is nonverbal and communicates through PECS and is presently learning to sign. The assessment provided the family and intervention team information critical for setting goals for Matt. Matt’s mother is still having difficulty accepting that her son has Autism, but is willing to do anything to help him in any way that she can. Today I learned from reflecting our third class session about how in special education it is important when doing assessments and utilizing the results into a student’s IEP (if the student is a special education student), that careful consideration has to be made prior to considering the validity of the assessment that is being used. I learned that essentially if an assessment has a reliability coefficient that is .80 to 1.00 then it would be considered reliable to use. However, if the reliability coefficient is below .80 then it should likely not be used because the validity of the test could be questioned and that would be a grave pitfall in utilizing in part with other sources of evidence in developing a student ’s IEP (initial, triennial,…
