Tea Cake was a young man and he was full of life. He had a free spirit and although he was poor, he did his best to provide for Janie. By the time Janie met Tea Cake, she was very hesitant about getting into any serious relationship with him. Tea Cake loved Janie and swore his loyalty to her and it took Janie a while to really accept him and his love. Tea Cake whisked Janie off to another town and another life and they lived happily. There were a few misunderstandings during their marriage mainly because Janie worried that she was too old for Tea Cake and that one day he would just leave her. However, it was all resolved because Tea Cake swore each time that he would only love Janie. There was one instance where he beat up Janie, but that was mainly done only because Tea Cake felt threatened by the other men and it was a way of showing everyone who the boss was in Janie and Tea Cake’s marriage and Janie did not really make a big deal out of it. Tea Cake treated Janie good and the marriage that she had with him was the best one that she had so far. Tea Cake included Janie in things from the moment he met her. He would not hold her back and he would not make her do anything she did not want to do. They were equals and Janie had not been treated like an equal in a very long time. Their marriage did not end happily though. Tea Cake got rabies and unlike Janie’s other marriages, she did not pull away from him when he was battling with his condition. She loved him and even though she shot and killed him in the end, she only did it because she was only trying to defend her own life, not because she wished any harm upon Tea Cake.
