In order to effectively coach an employee, you must follow four steps.
Step One: The person who needs the coaching must be identified. For example, if it is identified that an employee who is an event planner needs coaching, they must be observed while on the job. This would include them being under observation while meeting clients and during the process of actually organizing the event itself. After the employee is identified and it is known they need coaching, you can move on to step two.
Step Two: There needs to be a one-on-one discussion between the coach and the employee. After documenting the findings from your observations, you need to sit down and have a discussion with the employee. By doing so, you can rely your observations to them, while at the same time, they can give their opinions. For example, a professional football coach could identify that a specific player on the team is not performing as well as the other players on the team. After this identification, the coach observes the player during a few practices, noticing areas that he is not performing his best in. Next, the coach pulls the player over after practice one day and has a one-on-one discussion with the player, explaining his observations from the previous practices. The player then moves forward to go to a one-on-one training practice with the coach, practicing the areas he was struggling in, as well as getting pointers on how to improve these areas from the coach. The next week, the player goes back to practice with the team and is observed to see if he has any improvement.
