To what extent are disabled individuals oppressed in society
Disabled individuals face innumerable difficulties that affect their daily lives. Many of them are denied job opportunities’ simply because of physical aspects or mental conditions that cannot be controlled. As a result of being rejected by employers, disabled individuals turn to the government for financial assistance such as Social security checks, housing and food assistance. In many scenarios, disabled individuals are denied the opportunity to demonstrate their work abilities because potential employers are not convinced they have what it takes to perform well in a work environment. According to Disabled still face hurdles in job market’, The Washington Times, In developing countries, 80% to 90% of persons with disabilities of working age are unemployed, whereas in industrialized countries the figure is between 50% and 70%. The unemployment of these individuals is inhumane and abusive it affects their self-esteem because they want to be treated just like any other person who is looking for a way to support themselves financially. These individuals are often rejected from jobs and even denied interviews due to having a disability. Some employers don’t look past physical or mental disabilities that do not hinder their ability to perform the job they are applying for. There have been multiple cases where disabled individuals have sued for discrimination. For example, in the EEOC v. Kmart Corporation lawsuit Lorenzo Cook was offered a job at the Hyattsville, Maryland, store, he informed his hiring manager that he would not be able to provide the mandatory urine sample due to his kidney failure and dialysis. In the summer of 2010, an online survey of individuals with disabilities from around the world was established by Beth Haller, Ph.D. and Lingling Zhang, Ph.D. The main objective of this survey was to obtain information in regards about the perspectives about their representation by the news and entertainment media. Within this survey, the poll takers ages varied, the average age was 47 and the age range was from 18 to 82 years old. In the terms of gender, 26.7 % were male and 52.6% were female, with 81 cases where the question was not answered. Poll takers evaluated the news media coverage of 68 disability issues, The issues that discussed were subjects such as health care access, access to legal services, Medicare funding, special education segregation, and voting access. Pursuant to the survey the results demonstrated that these individuals feel that” American news media do a poor job covering disability issues. “.
