The government was divided into three branches, Executive, Judicial, and Legislative. The Executive branch was controlled by President, the Judicial branch was run by Congress, and lastly the Legislative branch was run by the Supreme Court. Although the three branches were independent, they also had constitutional control over each other and kept each other in check.
Furthermore, our constitution guards us from tyranny by having equal state representation. Congress has two houses, House of Representatives and Senate. The House of Representatives, which were representatives decided by population, and the Senate, where all states would only get two. This made sure that all states have equal power and have a say in their own government. If this did not exist, bigger states would overpower smaller states, therefore equal representation helped to avoid tyranny.
Tyranny takes place in many different forms and there are different ways to defend against it. We have our constitution, which prevents against tyranny by federalism, separating federal powers, checks and balances, and small/large state compromise. We have kept the same constitution for the past 228 years, which reaffirms us that the system we created is efficiently guarding against
