Mr. Engelking
The first step is to choose a passage to analyze. I chose to analyze the passage from Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. I picked this passage because a friend of mine gave me a summary of the book and it’s interesting themes, which sparked my interest to write about this passage from the book.
The second step is to pick the main subject that is in the passage. The main subject in this passage was greed. I chose this subject because the main character, Yossarian, comes across various situations where he notices people or public places that ignore, or have rules to ignore, people who are suffering from some form of physical or mental issue. One of the scenarios he witnesses is a fancy restaurant that refuses to serve the poor and hungry nearby. The military policeman encourages the soldiers to pin down the lieutenant with seizures because he has no empathy towards the pain that the lieutenant must be facing. As Yossarian walks down the street to find Milo, he encounters a group of soldiers trying to ground a lieutenant who is experiencing seizures. A jeep pulls in eventually, and a military policeman steps out to ask what is going on. Upon learning what the situation is, he tells the soldiers, “That’s good. He’s under arrest [....] keep him under arrest!” (17-19) and proceeds to laugh loudly. The PM’s encouragement to the soldiers to keep the lieutenant grounded shows how he lacks care for the safety of the already ill lieutenant. Instead of taking the ill-fated man to a hospital, the policeman orders the soldiers to continue putting him down. His laugh at the very end shows how he must view a man who is suffering from an illness as something humorous, which reveals how little he cares for his
