Can Nature Be the Cure? An illness is spreading in the United States. A dangerous condition that has no consideration for children, women or old people; it is affecting a big portion of the population and doesn’t seem to stop. Its name is obesity, and with seventy-eight million obese people, the 33% of the American population, the United States occupies the first place among the “fattest” countries in the world. This percentage is alarming since obesity increases the risk of suffering from diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol levels, just to name a few, and many of them cannot be cured. But what if they could be cured and prevented? In fact, a plant-based diet can stop and even reverse diseases causes by obesity. The cure is not in a pill, but in the nature. …show more content…
Nowadays, there is a huge consumption of animal-origin food, but there are not enough animals to meet the demand. For that reason, the farms try to increase the production at any cost, not considering the conditions of the animals, and reducing their space to very small cages, because “space now equates money”. What makes the situation worse is that the United States does not have federal laws that protect farm animals from cruelty and expose the inhumanity that takes place on the farms, which has been reported as illegal (A Concise Summary of Gene Stone’s Forks Over Knives, 2012). But there is an easy solution to this problem; in fact, if people start eating a plant-based diet, the demand for animal-origin food will decrease, and the farms will not have the same need for massive production; therefore, animals will be treated as they deserve to be, just because they are living beings, not “dollar signs taking up valuable real estate” (A Concise Summary of Gene Stone’s Forks Over Knives,
