Eating healthy has multiple benefits besides improving overall well-being. Eating healthy is an imperative decision that anyone can choose to follow for a better quality of life that will control weight, improve mood, combat disease, boost energy, and provide a longer life span.

Dietary changes can chemically and physiologically change brain structure and lead to altered behavior and mood. Researchers suspect that if one is feeling blue or wants to ward off feeling that way, making healthy food choices will help. The connection between eating healthy and mood is due to the non-essential amino acid tryptophan. As tryptophan enters the brain, more serotonin is synthesized in the brain, generating an improved mood. Serotonin plays a major role in determining mood in the human body because it is a mood regulator. Eating natural foods high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids such as flaxseed, fatty fish, and walnuts help protect against depression. Also, making smart carbohydrate choices such as fruits, whole grains, and vegetables will allow more serotonin to be synthesized in the brain. Unhealthy foods like fructose, gluten, and processed foods, are all linked to a greater risk in depression and irritability. That explains why consuming large amounts of chocolate, candy, or chips at one time can often lead to a feeling of guilt or shame due to eating unhealthy. That is because these chronic diseases share common conditions or risk factors that pertain to everyday choices and personal health habits.
