Carl Rogers said, “The very essence of the creative is its novelty, and hence we have no standard by which to judge it” (Brainy Quote, 2017). I have always believed that the adults of today, sadly myself included, have a tendency to brush kids off or stifle their creative process. For me I use to brush my kids off, more out of not having the patience. What I have learned is that if I take 5 minutes to explain to him what something is or what it means, or listens to their crazy ideas, or just letting them have the cardboard box that they will destroy after a while and leave all over my house. Rogers seemed to want to try and apply approach to all types of counseling; individual, group, and couples. As well as traveling the world and working with other cultures and traditions, before his passing, Rogers tried to apply PCT to world peace. Rogers believed that building a strong therapeutic relationship with your client was necessary, but also implementing the therapeutic core conditions. The therapeutic core conditions are Congruence, Unconditional Positive Regard, and Empathy. Through PCT the counselor is not the expert, the client is the expert of his or her own life. Maybe it is the fact that my lens may change over the next few years, but for me I am drawn to Person-Centered Therapy (PCT). I do know there are a couple of theories, humanistic and existential, I still need to give the proper research and time too. PCT appeals to me because the whole basis of the client runs the entire show. My job is to be the one person in my client’s corner. Having a strong therapeutic relationship with your client triggers the client’s ability to self-heal, which in turn will empower them. The main point is for the clients to find their own resolution without the counselor’s guide. Additionally I was drawn to this theory because of its name. One of the first things I learned in this program is counseling is not about us, it is about the client. In my reading and research about this theory, I was intrigued by the idea that the client is in control of their sessions.
