Cardiovascular System The human body is made up of several systems that need to work together to function properly. These systems are essential for survival. The cardiovascular system is one of the most important systems in the human body. The main components of the cardiovascular system is the heart, the blood vessels, and the blood. What is Cardiovascular system? The cardiovascular system, which is also known as the circulatory system, consists of the heart and blood vessels that carry nutrients and oxygen to the tissues of the body. It also removes carbon dioxide and other wastes from them. The term cardio is related to the heart while vascular relates to veins, arteries and movement of blood. All these elements combine go create the Cardiovascular System. When you hear the term cardio, you think of the heart. The heart is one of the most important organs in our body. Its located between the lungs in the middle of your chest, and the heart is behind and slightly to the left of your sternum, which is your breastbone. The heart is a muscular, cone-shaped organ. The size of the heart is approximately the size of a clenched fist. The wall of the heart itself is made up of a special type of muscle called cardiac muscle. The heart pumps blood through veins and arteries known as the cardiovascular system. A double-layered membrane called the pericardium surrounds your heart like a sac.
