He believes that suffragettes are the “best allies” for Futurists, because they are stronger and more determined for change; they do not let their gendered image bound them to a domestic lifestyle. Marinetti claims that helping suffragettes gain their right to vote would benefit the Futurist cause of destroying the government, because woman’s inferior nature “can only be a mediocre legislative instrument” (56). His opinion stems from the expression “scorn for woman,” making the implication that woman is vacant and beautiful; this also indicates woman as uneducated, weak and easily manipulated into making any vote man raises. Therefore, he is more or less saying, let women gain the power to vote, so they can make it easier for us to break down the corruptive government. These two statements become a paradox; even though Marinetti says that the Futurists want to empower women, because it will benefit both genders, he really only plans use them as a tool and object.
Marinetti considers the differences between suffragettes and women; he draws attention to the disparities in strength, which evidently reduces both groups of women to inferior objects. Marinetti begins his manifesto by describing woman as a “leash” (55), and ends up describing women as “too earthbound” (58), therefore, women must be subtracted from the …show more content…
Woman, or the “leash,” (55) “keeps the valiant earth chained to its orbit, when certainly it would prefer to leap wherever chance took it, to take its chance with the stars” (55). The symbolism of the “leash” (55) speaks more to what it “[keeps chained]” (55); the leash restrains the “valiant earth” or the men (Futurists). The fact that men are wearing the leash suggests that the object needs more sexual restrictions. It also indicates that the object is instinctively notorious for straying from their owner or influenced to run away from their owner. This is a proven fact, because Marinetti states that they would preferably flee if they ever got the chance. Men are not able to fulfill their wants and desires, because they are being controlled and taken in directions that they don’t want to go to; therefore, men are weaker than women, which is why they try so hard to make women feel
