All they basically needed to know was what taste good together and hoe to make it. To be a become a good chef you would have to be able to “distinguish London ale by flavor”(154). If they were going to become a chef in the castle, they would have to know how to use everything in the kitchen like the buttery, the bottlery, and the pantry. Also they would need to know how to do many things such as “roast and seethe and broil and fry, make good thick soup and back a tatty pie”(154). The royal cooks would get to the castle by being born in a higher class because no castle would allow a peasant to prepare food for them. The was of becoming certified as a chef or a cook are completely different. In modern times you have to have a high school diploma, and a certification from the American Culinary Federation. To get a jump start to a cooking career, people may choose to go to college and take a series of cooking classes to try to master the art of cooking. To become a celebrity chef, you have to go though many challenges to get your food and your name out in the world. Like cooks in the middle ages, people learn how to cook from teaching themselves and also from elders. The attire of cooks then and now weren't the same style, but had the same purpose. The made money by working in the city and selling to those who didn't have a kitchen at their home.Of the cooks who were selling to other normally “were people who were running their own businesses”(Geo Harvey). The cooks who worked in a manor were normally born into the noble class to be able to receive that position. These manor cooks would cook in the finest velvets, silks, furs, laces, cottons, and taffetas. They would wear these because they would have the money to buy them. This shows how the clothes suggest what socioeconomic status a cook has. If you see a cook in wool you know they are poor because if they had the worry they would have bought the fine
