What Is My Grandmother Essay

Unlike most people, I was raised and cared for by my grandparents a large part of my life. It has always been apparent that I have felt a great deal closer to them than to my biological parents. Uniquely, my grandparents were born on the same day – February 22nd – but two years apart. Because of this, as a young child I believed that you had to marry someone who had the same birthday as you and had great difficulty in understanding how my parents got married legally.

From the minute that someone walks into their home, they are offered tea or coffee and whatever home baking my grandmother has prepared, to be brought on a tray with fragile china only guests are allowed – I have never been granted such privilege. If they refuse, however, both are deeply offended and the guest will be given it anyway. The phrase “no thank you” lacks meaning in their home. My grandmother always shows guests – even the postman- photo albums of myself as a young child, something I have always suffered great embarrassment of. However I must try to remember that she took great pride in my upbringing. She often tells people that I am “a MacDonald and not a Macrae”, directly referencing the abrupt and unwelcoming manner of my
