The Burke Litwin model of Organizational Change and Performance showcases the cause and effect relationship between 12 interconnected dimensions within an organization (Burke, Litwin, 1992). The model is divided into two separate factor domains, transformational and transactional. The transformational factors are high ranking order changes which are core to an organizations performance and need to be addressed first, to make long term significant organizational change (Burke, Litwin, 1992). While transactional factors are dimensions which are more easily changed, but may only be temporary if the transformational changes are not aligned properly. In conjunction to the Western State University case study, elements of each of these dimensions are evident. The mission statement of the registrar’s office is to provide “Exemplary service offered by well-trained competent and involved staff”. However, the mission statement is not being executed by the departments. The case study addresses the leadership domain but not in full detail. The leaders which are discussed throughout the case study largely display negative leadership attributes. Lucy, the Director of Undergraduate Admissions is coveting the new registrar’s position, Glenn Rothman the Director of Financial aid is currently under investigation for suspected unethical behaviors, Jorge Santana, the Interim Director of Financial aid is perceived as controlling and combative by his subordinates and Mariel, the Director of the Enrollment services department is crossing personal religious boundaries at the expense of alienating certain members of her staff. However, the leadership styles of both Marta, the new registrar and Sam Taylor the Dean of Student Affairs have not been solidified within the case study. The Enrollment Services Department handles all student processes related to tuition, registration fees, course selection and enrollment in addition to overseeing student progress throughout their academic career at the university. The Enrollment Services Department consist of a director and various support staff. The director of the department is Mariel Kennedy. Mariel is a devout Christian and kind hearted leader, who takes an interest in her staff professionally and personally. She showcases her appreciation and concern by giving birthday cards and by offering to pray for those in distress. However, several of her staff members with differing religious beliefs are uncomfortable with her religious zeal. She has began opening all departmental meetings with a bible scripture. Members of her staff do not feel they can openly oppose her religious beliefs because she is in a position of power. One cause for concern, is an openly homosexual staff member named Steve, who is especially apprehensive about approaching Mariel because of her religious views, he knows that Christian doctrine views his lifestyle as a sin. He is currently being harassed about his homosexual lifestyle by a fellow employee within the department. However, he is unsure how to approach the situation since Mariel is his supervisor.
