Though the university is made up of many moving parts, which incorporates different design structures and operational policies, Bethel University itself, still operates in a unified fashion towards the completion of short-term and long-term organizational objectives. As described by Meadows (2008), the reason systems work so well is based on the identification of or development of three characteristics, which are resilience, self-organization, and hierarchy. In my professional experience, Bethel University exudes all three of these characteristics which have allowed our university to overcome many external and internal threats over the last decade. Bethel University has become accustomed to working within a state of what I have come to refer to as organized chaos. Over the years, my executive leadership team has realized that change is neither good or bad but more of a necessity throughout our struggle to remain relevant within the higher education industry. One of most obvious goals of Bethel University is to “create opportunities.” The idea of creating opportunities refers to how Bethel University offers the means for persons to have choices and options opened before them and to develop the confidence and maturity to choose appropriately. Secondly, one of Bethel University’s most important goals is to support the “learning community.” The learning community refers to all individuals which seek personal, as well as, professional development through Bethel University and the use of higher education. Thirdly, Bethel University is focused on creating an educational environment fit for all students, faculty, and the surrounding community by maintaining a Christian environment, which is both empathetic and supportive of those that choose to participate. Understandably, the primary and overall focus of Bethel University is to facilitate instruction and guidance to students and faculty regardless of the manner of instruction. Furthermore, Bethel University in conjunction with the Board of Directors is responsible for the development and ongoing improvements of the design curriculum.
