The first two stages of the Tuckman’s model of group formation are focused on the interpersonal relationship. The first stage is described as the orientation stage (Tuckman, 1965); it is called the forming stage. During the forming stage, there are little agreements on team aims as the individual roles are still unclear. Team members avoid having conflict by acting very mannered. Leader plays the biggest role in this stage, they are the one making decisions and leading the whole team. The second …show more content…
The external factors for instance are the group’s task, the technology used, personal background of its members and the management style (Holman, 1950). Ginnett (1990) stated that airline crews are able to immediately react to a new group due to the normalization of working with new group members, disregarding the need to progress through Tuckman’s five stages model. As a result, this illustrates that Tuckman’s five stages theory might not be the most suitable theory to explain the team dynamics.
Bruce Tuckman’s five stages theory can be used to explain team dynamics, the effectiveness of the theory depends on the type of leadership style used and the size of the group. This model is suitable for a small group of 3 to 12 people using a directive leadership style. The theory is still missing in many aspects, in order to fully understand team dynamics; other theory might be required to be used alongside with Tuckman’s theory such as Belbin’s team role
