Briggs and Stratton first acquired the A.O. Smith motor wheel which would help revolutionized Harold’s and Stephen’s company; with the A.O Smith motor wheel Briggs and Stratton were able to power bicycles and the Briggs and Stratton Flyer. Yet, Briggs and Stratton kept on inventing until they created the Type “P” engine. The Type “P” engine advanced the four cycle engine industry, because the Type “P” engine was a portable and reliable means of power; which means that the uses for this engine could be expanded past what the A.O Smith motor wheel could do. After making the Type “P” engine Briggs and Stratton were able to service the everyday person by putting their engines into washing machines, tractors, and cultivators. Despite the Type “P” engine being used mainly for agricultural it found a way into the military were it was used to power generators, magnetos, and ignition switches; all of these purposes added onto the fame of the Type “P” engine. Even with the great success of the Type “P” engine Briggs and Stratton saw room for improvement, so Briggs and Stratton made an engine that was all aluminum. As soon as released the aluminum engine started to rack up sales, because being made out completely aluminum the engine was extremely light; that means the engine was a lot lighter than the previous engines made. That is why in only four years the all-aluminum engine …show more content…
In the nineteen seventies the United States of America faced a gas shortage, because the American public was burning more gas than the oil wells could pump out, so when confronted with this problem Briggs and Stratton designed an electric motor. Yet, the gas shortage was just the tip of the iceberg; Frightened by the weak yen Japanese companies started to manufacture small engines. This was a problem because the Japanese had more resources and could produce more engines for less money, so in order to combat the Japanese competitors Briggs and Stratton made a hybrid motor that ran on both gas and electricity. However, Briggs and Stratton were still not in the clear because the Japanese kept dropping the prices on their engines. This still threatened Briggs and Stratton’s leadership, so Briggs and Stratton started focus groups that would help drop the prices of manufacturing engines; as the prices of manufacturing their engines became cheaper Briggs and Stratton Built new manufacturing plants to deal with mass marketization. Now Briggs and Stratton traditionally provided engines for agricultural uses but now they expanded into new fields to keep the sales up. This just goes to show that Briggs and Stratton is ready to conform to any problem without any
