Old Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Exodus/Moses/Sinai
Exodus is the second book of five in the Pentateuch or Torah of the Old Testament. It is also the second book in the Hebrew Bible, and is known as V’elleh Shemoth, while in the Greek Bible it is known as Exodus, meaning “departure” or “outgoing”. Moses is believed to be the author of Exodus, and it was most likely written during the forty years of wandering in the wilderness, between 1451 and 1491 BC. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven” (Exodus 17:14).

The Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby and later adopted him, so Moses grew up as an Egyptian prince but always knew of his Hebrew heritage. When Moses killed and buried the body of an Egyptian guard who had beaten a Hebrew slave, he ran into the desert afraid for his life. It is during this time that Moses encounters God, and that through the burning bush tells him to go back and free the Israelites from slavery. When the Pharaoh refuses their freedom God releases the Ten Plagues; 1. Blood 2. Frogs 3. Lice 4. Flies 5. Disease on Livestock 6. Boils 7. Hail 8. Locusts 9. Darkness 10. Death of the First-Born. The Pharaoh, so upset with the death of his son by the last plague, demanded that all Hebrew leave his kingdom. Pharaoh later changes his mind and sends an army that chases them all the way to the Red Sea, where the miracle of Moses parting the Sea long enough for the Israelites to pass through takes place. Upon getting to Mount Sinai Moses goes up the mountain for forty days and nights and when returning has ten laws from God. These laws are known as the Ten Commandments, and were written into two tablets which told the people how to live. These commandments include; 1. Thou shall have no other gods before me 2. Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image 3. Thou shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain 4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy 5. Honor thy Father
