There comes a day in everyone’s life where they can no longer live by themselves. Having to move out of their house and into a nursing home can be a very emotional and stressful time for everyone. Nobody really likes to move at any point in their life because it can cause a lot of change, and for most people change is difficult and hard to deal with. Not only has this person probably spent most of their life in their home but there are many memories that can be lost with the move to a nursing home. But taking the rights steps can help the senior to adjust to a new beginning in the nursing home. There are many things that can help make the transition just a little bit easier on not only the family but the elderly person also.
The most important step is to make the senior feel like they are at home in their new unfamiliar space. Check with the nursing staff first, but decorating the patient’s room like a room they would have in their own home would allow them to become more comfortable in a totally new space. Buying things such as curtains, picture frames, rugs, and throw blankets can help to liven up the dreary, white walled room. Getting the family to visit and still spend time with the senior can help them to adjust and be more welcome and open to being involved in the nursing home. They will feel that they are not forgotten and are still being cared for by their family and nursing staff working at the nursing home. Encouraging the resident to get involved in activities throughout the nursing home is important so that they get a sense of belonging and feel at home in their brand new living
